I’ve always wanted a Tie Down mount for my GoPro (or any action camera for that matter), but never fully embraced the off-the-shelf solutions. Here’s a DIY kit. I spent a little more for aluminum mounts, but I’m sure the plastic ones will hold up fine.
For this Project, you’ll need:
- GoPro Tripod Mount (almost all of them are 1/4-20 threads)
-
- $9.95
- GoPro 90 Degree Adapter – again there are quite a few out there
-
- $9.95
- The second thumbscrew in the picture will come with the GoPro. If you want an aluminum screw, you can find them here:
-
- $6.95
- The CamLock is part of a woodworking kit, I used these:
-
- $11.99
- (2) 1.5″ OD 1/4″ fender washers
-
- I got these at the local hardware store,
-
- $0.050
- (2) 1.5″ OK 1/4″ rubber washers
-
- I got these at the local hardware store
-
- $1.00
- The remaining rubber washer and steel washer came with the cam locks
- Total Cost = $33.35 (exluding the second thumb screw)
- You can reduce cost by using plastic parts, they’ll probably hold up just fine.
Once I had all the parts, I cut the flat end off of one of the threaded rods from the camlock kit to make my 1/4″-20 threaded rod section below. For my application, I made the rod 2.25″ long.

…And here’s a fun video showing the mount in action on my Mooney M20C
